The Manager Induction Standards (MIS) have been developed by Skills for Care.  They help new managers by supporting Leadership and Management core skills through recognising and building on existing knowledge, experience and practice.

These core units are focussed on person-centred planning for those who receive social care services and helps with a vision of achievement and outcomes focus.

These standards have been designed for the purpose of supporting ‘new’ managers in adult social care.  This can include those who are new the the management role or those who have managed other care services.

The Six Manager Induction Standards are:

1

understanding the importance of promoting social care principles and values: Looks at the key principles and values of social care, which underpin good leadership and management practice.

2

providing direction and facilitating change: Looks at understanding the role of the manager in providing direction and facilitating change within a social and environmental context which includes health and safety.

3

working with people: Looks at understanding the role of the manager in leading and developing team and individual performance: supervision, recruitment and induction of new staff, ensuring others’ learning, and effective communication.

4

using resources: Looks at the manager’s responsibility for using a range of resources: finance, contracts, buildings and technology.

5

achieving outcomes: Looks at delivering a quality service that is customer-focused and the manager’s responsibilities for performance management processes, partnership working, information sharing, record keeping and change management.

6

managing self and personal skills: Looks at managers taking responsibility for their own continuing professional development and the leadership and management skills needed to develop competence in the role.

  • There are  workbooks help the manager  to follow a pathway developing on existing knowledge and experiences and moving forward beyond the above standards.
